29th Holy Episcopal Synod Concludes with Renewed Commitment to Faith and Mission

The Syro-Malankara Catholic Church joyfully announces the conclusion of its 29th Ordinary Holy Episcopal Synod, held from March 10–13, 2025, at the Catholicate Centre, Pattom. Sixteen bishops, under the leadership of His Eminent Beatitude Cardinal Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos, gathered in prayerful reflection and consultation, reaffirming their commitment to the Church's mission and the spiritual vitality of the faithful.
The Synod was inaugurated with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy on March 11, with His Beatitude as the principal celebrant and the assembled bishops as concelebrants. This profound liturgical gathering symbolized the unity of the Church’s shepherds and their shared dedication to the service of Christ and His Church.
Over the subsequent days, the Synod addressed several vital matters. On March 12, the Secretaries of the Synodal Commissions presented their reports, highlighting ongoing initiatives and future priorities. On March 13, the bishops engaged with the Provincial Superiors, Superior Generals of Religious Congregations, and Directors of the Bible Apostolate, emphasizing the Church’s continued focus on evangelization, pastoral formation, and deepening the faithful’s relationship with Sacred Scripture.
In response to pressing societal concerns, the Synod issued a strong appeal to confront the growing menace of substance abuse. The bishops called upon the entire Church community to take active steps in safeguarding the moral integrity of society, recognizing this as a collective responsibility.
Looking ahead, the Synod announced important initiatives as the Church prepares for its historic Centenary Celebrations. The Year of the Word of God and the Reunion Anniversary will formally conclude in September 2025 with celebrations in the Eparchy of Pathanamthitta. The year 2025–2026 has been designated as the Liturgical Formation Year, aiming to renew and deepen the faithful’s participation in the sacramental and liturgical life of the Church.
Several new appointments were also announced to strengthen the work of various Church Commissions:
Dr. Joju John was appointed Secretary of the Education Commission.
Rev. Fr. Scott Sleeba was named Secretary of the Media Commission.
Dr. Varghese K. Cherian was entrusted with the leadership of the Laity Commission.
With profound gratitude to Almighty God, the 29th Holy Episcopal Synod concluded with a renewed spirit of unity, hope, and dedication, as the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church continues its journey of faith, mission, and service to the world.
