Eparchy Honors the Life and Legacy of His Holiness Pope Francis with Memorial at St. Vincent De Paul Cathedral

The St. Mary Queen of Peace Eparchy gathered in solemn remembrance and prayer to honor the life, service, and spiritual legacy of His Holiness Pope Francis at a Memorial Celebration held on Sunday, April 27, 2024, at St. Vincent De Paul Syro-Malankara Catholic Cathedral, Elmont, New York.
The day began with the celebration of the Holy Qurbono (Divine Liturgy) at 10:00 AM, presided over by the Eparchial Bishop, His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Philipos Mar Stephanos. The liturgy was offered in thanksgiving for the life of Pope Francis, the 266th successor of St. Peter, whose papacy touched countless lives with humility, compassion, and a bold witness to the Gospel.
Following the Divine Liturgy, a Memorial Prayer Meeting was held in the Cathedral Hall. The program commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, symbolizing the eternal light of Christ and the enduring legacy of the Holy Father. Very Rev. Noby Ayyaneth, Cathedral Rector, warmly welcomed all those in attendance.
Heartfelt memorial messages were delivered by:
His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Philipos Mar Stephanos, who reflected on Pope Francis’ pastoral heart and global impact;
His Excellency Mor Titus Yeldho, Archbishop and Patriarchal Vicar of the Malankara Archdiocese of the Syrian Orthodox Church in North America, who offered a moving tribute to the ecumenical spirit of the Holy Father;
and Bishop Johncy Itty, retired Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon, who emphasized Pope Francis’ commitment to Christian unity and justice.
The event continued with intercessory prayers for the repose of Pope Francis’ soul and for the Church he so faithfully shepherded. The gathering concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mrs. Rincy Baby, Secretary of the Eparchial Pastoral Council, expressing gratitude to all dignitaries and faithful who participated in this prayerful tribute.
Lunch was served following the memorial, providing a time of fellowship and remembrance among clergy, religious, and laity.
The Eparchy gives thanks to God for the life and papacy of Pope Francis, a shepherd who embodied mercy, simplicity, and unwavering commitment to the poor and marginalized. May his soul rest in the eternal peace of Christ, and may his memory continue to inspire faithful witness across the world.
