Lk 10:25-37

The Greatest Commandment.w 25* There was a scholar of the law* who stood up to test him and said, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”x 26Jesus said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read it?” 27He said in reply, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”y 28He replied to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.”z

The Parable of the Good Samaritan. 29But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30Jesus replied, “A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead. 31* A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. 32Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. 33But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight. 34He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn and cared for him. 35The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, ‘Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.’ 36Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?” 37He answered, “The one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Dt 6:1-15

1This then is the commandment, the statutes and the ordinances,a which the LORD, your God, has commanded that you be taught to observe in the land you are about to cross into to possess, 2so that you, that is, you, your child, and your grandchild, may fear the LORD, your God, by keeping, as long as you live, all his statutes and commandmentsb which I enjoin on you, and thus have long life. 3Hear then, Israel, and be careful to observe them, that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly; for the LORD, the God of your ancestors, promised you a land flowing with milk and honey.c

The Great Commandment.* 4d Hear, O Israel!* The LORD is our God, the LORD alone! 5Therefore, you shall love the LORD, your God, with your whole heart, and with your whole being, and with your whole strength.e 6f Take to heart these words which I command you today.g 7Keep repeating them to your children. Recite them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you get up.h 8Bind them on your arm as a sign* and let them be as a pendant on your forehead.i 9Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates.j

Fidelity in Prosperity. 10k When the LORD, your God, brings you into the land which he swore to your ancestors, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that he would give you, a land with fine, large cities that you did not build,l 11with houses full of goods of all sorts that you did not garner, with cisterns that you did not dig, with vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant; and when, therefore, you eat and are satisfied,m 12n be careful not to forget the LORD, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that house of slavery. 13o The LORD, your God, shall you fear; him shall you serve,* and by his name shall you swear. 14p You shall not go after other gods, any of the gods of the surrounding peoples— 15for the LORD, your God who is in your midst, is a passionate God—lest the anger of the LORD, your God, flare up against you and he destroy you from upon the land.

Nm 2:4-9

4and the enrollment of his company is seventy-four thousand six hundred. 5Encamped beside it is the tribe of Issachar. The leader of the Issacharites is Nethanel, son of Zuar, 6and the enrollment of his company is fifty-four thousand four hundred. 7Also the tribe of Zebulun. The leader of the Zebulunites is Eliab, son of Helon, 8and the enrollment of his company is fifty-seven thousand four hundred. 9The total enrollment of the camp of Judah by companies is one hundred and eighty-six thousand four hundred. They shall be first on the march.

Prv 3:25-35

25Do not be afraid of sudden terror,

of the ruin of the wicked when it comes;

26For the LORD will be your confidence,

and will keep your foot from the snare.

27Do not withhold any goods from the owner

when it is in your power to act.

28Say not to your neighbor, “Go, come back tomorrow,

and I will give it to you,” when all the while you have it.

29Do not plot evil against your neighbors,

when they live at peace with you.

30Do not contend with someone without cause,

with one who has done you no harm.

31Do not envy the violent

and choose none of their ways:i

32To the LORD the devious are an abomination,

but the upright are close to him.

33The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked,

but the dwelling of the just he blesses;

34Those who scoff, he scoffs at,j

but the lowly he favors.

35The wise will possess glory,

but fools will bear shame.

Is 48:12-16

12Listen to me, Jacob,

Israel, whom I called!

I, it is I who am the first,

and am I the last.d

13Yes, my hand laid the foundations of the earth;

my right hand spread out the heavens.

When I summon them,

they stand forth at once.e

14All of you assemble and listen:

Who among you declared these things?

The one the LORD loves* shall do his will

against Babylon and the offspring of Chaldea.

15I myself have spoken, I have summoned him,

I have brought him, and his way succeeds!

16Come near to me and hear this!

From the beginning I did not speak in secret;

At the time it happens, I am there:

“Now the Lord GOD has sent me, and his spirit.”*

Jas 5:1-6

Warning to the Rich.* 1Come now, you rich, weep and wail over your impending miseries.a 2Your wealth has rotted away, your clothes have become moth-eaten,b 3your gold and silver have corroded, and that corrosion will be a testimony against you; it will devour your flesh like a fire. You have stored up treasure for the last days.c 4Behold, the wages you withheld from the workers who harvested your fields are crying aloud, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.d 5You have lived on earth in luxury and pleasure; you have fattened your hearts for the day of slaughter.e 6You have condemned; you have murdered the righteous one;f he offers you no resistance.*

Rom 15:1-6

Patience and Self-Denial. 1We who are strong ought to put up with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves;a 2let each of us please our neighbor for the good, for building up.b 3For Christ did not please himself; but, as it is written,c “The insults of those who insult you fall upon me.”* 4For whatever was written previously was written for our instruction, that by endurance and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope.d 5May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to think in harmony* with one another, in keeping with Christ Jesus,e 6that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
